Mexican infusion

Driving eastbound on Eglinton from Dufferin on the way home, my wife suddenly shouted, “Turn around! I want Dulce de Leche Churros!”  “Really?” I said, not understanding the urgency.

I didn’t get it, but I turned the car at Jimmy Wisdom Way, went through the Starbank convenience mart parking lot and back to a place called Churros 92.

There was a parking space right in front. Something rare these days. Inside, the churros place has been reborn. They’ve got churros (obviously), specialty drinks, coffee, ice cream, and lots of other treats on their menu. They have all kinds of machines to whip up almost anything churro related. On the walls, they put up some unique Mexican art. We’re talking Salvador Dali churro art.

We got our churros and we headed out. Right beside the churros place, was a brand-new Veracruz restaurant.  I had to check it out. With a “We have to go!” behind me, I ran inside to check it out. It’s a small café, but from their menu they have a big selection of Mexican specials. Like Mexican ceviche at a good price. The lady at the corner met me with a smile and gave me the restaurant’s Instagram address to check out her place later.

Heading back to the car, my wife said, “How can anyone hate Mexican immigrants?” She was referring to the characters south of the border pushing for mass deportations.  It’s true. It doesn’t make any sense.  Mexican immigrants to Canada are bringing their food, energy, and culture to Eglinton West. The depressed strip of road close to Dufferin is lucky to have their businesses. And so are we.

As we took off in the car, my wife took a bite of her churro while the sounds of Reggae filled the air from a sidewalk speaker at a nearby Jamaican patty place.

Little Jamaica with an infusion of Mexico. This stretch of Eglinton West is sounding and tasting great these days.
