88 planes or 350,000 new homes?

The Canadian government bought 88 fighter planes for $19 billion.  The cost to maintain the planes will push the deal to $70 billion.

It’s hard to know what a billion means, so the Midtowner calculated how many new homes could have been built with that money.  In Toronto, building a new 1000 sq ft home costs on average $200,000

For the same price Canadians are paying for those 88 planes, we could have had 350,000 new homes right here in the country’s most expensive city.

But the deal doesn’t stop there.  The Globe and Mail reminded us that to continue meeting our obligations to NATO, Canada must pay another $74 billion within the next four years.
