Don’t push me

I was out knocking on doors last week. One woman opened and then quickly asked, “You’re not going to push politics on me, are you?” Good question.

The politics being pushed these days sound a bit like this: Mark Carney is a knight in shining armour, the only one who can defeat the evil orange dragon. Pierre Poilievre is the dangerous black knight who lost his lead, and his edge. And Jagmeet Singh, well, he’s just a hapless squire in this dragonslayer story. The Greens don’t figure in this story at all.

Mark Carney will likely be coronated at the end of the day on Monday, April 28. The media has pushed this story of the election as a done deal from the very start. Their pollsters and their daily commentary were consistent.

It didn’t surprise me to learn that two million Canadians voted in the advance polls. There’s a lot at stake when an orange dragon is attacking your home. You need to support your knight.

But I was talking to a fellow dad from my daughter’s school who said he doesn’t know about this election. He saw something about Mark Carney wearing $2000 shoes to play hockey. “Where do you even find $2000 shoes?” he asked. I laughed.  We don’t even know where to spend that kind of money on shoes. But Pierre Poilievre sure does. He’s the one who posted it on X.

These days, I’m really concerned about my ability to pay bills. This week I found that my $150 shopping day turned into $200. My auto insurance company sent me registered mail warning of me of cancelling my policy, for one late payment, even though I’ve been their customer for over 10 years. The only saving grace is the price of gasoline. But even the Financial Post says it’s only expected to stay down over the next few months.

At least until the coronation is over.

I don’t know if Carney was wearing those shoes or not, but he has made a long career of representing people who do.

As for me, I’m wearing my $30 shoes to knock on doors and push free subscriptions to my e-newsletter. The woman at the door did sign up by the way. Thank you for that, neighbour.
