Tale of two LRTs

The city of Quito, located in a volcanic valley, full of hills, crevices and sensitive historic sites, started its rapid transit project in 2016. Today it’s fully operational and moving hundreds of thousands of people every day.

Quito Metro (MDQ) is comparable to our Eglinton Crosstown LRT.

Quito Metro is 23 km long, while the Eglinton LRT is 19 km. Quito Metro has 15 stops while the Eglinton LRT has 25. The cost to build Quito Metro was $2 billion. The cost to build the Eglinton LRT stands at nearly $13 billion and growing. Their LRT is running. Ours is not. Despite our construction starting in 2011, a five-year headstart.
