Smoking in Delhi

The doomsday clock is set 90 seconds away from certain annihilation due to global disease, climate change, and a potential nuclear war in Ukraine.

When I heard the news, I thought of my time in Delhi.

I loved Delhi, but it was the late 80s and the air was thick with pollution. Every breath was a lung full of black engine exhaust.   Like drowning slowly.

There was no escaping the choking air so I took action.  I started smoking.

I decided that instead of having the exhaust come from others, it would come from me.

At least I was in control.

I feel that’s what’s happening to the world.  It feels like we can’t change a thing.

So, we take action.  But in the wrong direction.  We start new wars and we build more cars.

At least we’re in control.
