On war and stolen bikes

War reminds me of stolen bikes.

Every single one of my bikes was stolen in this city. No matter if it had a lock or not. I used to think that Torontonians just stole bikes. Like it was part of our culture. Bike stealing. Then one year, my bikes stopped getting stolen. It was the same year that Toronto police arrested Igor Kenk.

He was the city’s stolen-bike kingpin. He amassed 3,000 stolen bikes in the city with the help of thieves. Through a sting operation, the Toronto police arrested Kenk and shut down his bike-stealing operation.

My bikes were never stolen again.

It might be the same with war.  We have so many wars in the world today.  The biggest ones you see in the news every day. And we think, we’re just like that. Human beings have a war culture.

But maybe there is a war kingpin, or kingpins in the world today. “Kenks” who support war in the background, who whisper war in the ears of political leaders. Individuals who make a lot of money off war.

Maybe it’s time for a sting operation on these war dealers. Shut down their war operations. And maybe we’ll shut down large-scale wars, like we shut down stolen bikes in Toronto.
