I was mad at Auston Matthews. He couldn’t play game 5 or game 6 of the playoffs because he had a stomach ache. That’s BS, I thought. We pay him almost $60 million to play.
He’s not gonna play game 7 because of a belly ache? Who are his bosses anyway? I had something to say to them.
Turns out the Toronto Maple Leafs, worth $2.8 B, are owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), who also own the Raptors ($4B) and Scotiabank arena.
And who owns MLSE? The same company that owns CTV, CP24, the Globe and Mail and Bell Canada – Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. And who owns this giant? Canadian banks like the Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of Montreal, and CIBC.
Turns out Matthews did play game 7. The Leafs lost anyway. And I shouldn’t get mad at a man for being sick. Just because we pay Auston Matthews lots of money, doesn’t mean we own him.
But I did find out that Canadian banks own our sports. They own our mortgages. They own our Internet. They own our cell phone service. They own our news.
I may not own Auston Matthews but his owners own me.
