100 years of Eglinton LRT

We have a new neighbour at our Dufferin Street shop. His name is Mackenzie. It’s only been a couple of weeks, but he’s already trimmed the jungle of branches that covered up our parking spaces at the back. He’s removed the used toilet left outside for weeks by the previous landlord. And new plants are growing on the fresh soil on the edges of our small parking lot.  “I’ve been cleaning up,” he told me, full of earned pride. Mackenzie is opening a new restaurant. He mentioned the Eglinton LRT, hoping it will bring lots of customers. He can’t wait.

“Not for the next five years. These are 10, 20, 30, 100-year projects,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, the minister in charge of the LRT.

Sarkaria made the comment at a recent tunnelling announcement of the Eglinton LRT to Mississauga. He was responding to a reporter’s question about when the LRT will be finished.

While the minister thinks big, about extending the LRT to Mississauga and beyond. While he thinks of about the province, the country, and the next election, our LRT is still under construction, 13 years later. Mackenzie and I are still waiting.

Hopefully, not for 100 years.
