Roofing scam

A reader in our area told me he was scammed by men who came to his door to fix his roof. He wants you to know about it, so you don’t fall into the same trap. He reports that the scam worked like this: Two guys, Jay and Sean, knocked on his door. They said they were working in the neighbourhood and that they noticed a couple loose shingles on his roof, and they offered to pin them back for $40. Our reader said go ahead, without checking.

Once on his roof, they knocked again and told him the issue was much bigger, and it would be $1000.  The following day, they said their guy working on the roof, indicated it was an even bigger problem and that it would be $5000.  Distressed, our reader called his handyman who told him they were scammers and to tell them to get off the property. They patched what they did with mismatched shingles and left a ragged job. Our fair reader still paid them, because he didn’t want any retaliation. Let’s just say the “roofers” weren’t grateful, uttering racial slurs before leaving.

In the end our reader’s handyman brought his roofer to redo the hack job. It cost him another $500. The scammers had a truck and a long ladder.

In case two unknown men knock on your door, just don’t open it. But if you’re already out, just say, “No thank you.” “Take care.”
