Hostile takeover

Back-to-school always made me nervous as a kid. New teachers, new classrooms, new kids—it was the great unknown. Most of the time it worked out fine. This year? No mystery. It will be worse.

That’s because the provincial government has taken over the TDSB. And now, believe it or not, they’re even talking about dissolving it altogether.

Why? Because the board didn’t want to make cuts. Turns out standing up for kids gets Trustees sent to the principal’s office. Mismanagement review, they call it.

So, what happens if they actually dissolve the TDSB? The province runs our schools directly. Sounds fine until you realize they talk about education budgets like they’re running a Bay Street hedge fund. Smaller class sizes? More teachers? More supports for kids? Nope. That costs money. The plan is cuts.

And who’s in charge now? A privatization czar: Rohit Gupta is a private sector expert in public-private partnerships.

Right now, everyone’s mostly quiet about it. But when classrooms get even more crowded, and when families who can afford it start quietly moving their kids into private schools, we’ll notice.

As the Premier once said: “I believe in letting the market dictate.” That might work for avocados at No Frills. But for schools? Not so much.
