Our tariff war with Trump reminds me of George Orwell’s The Lion and the Unicorn, where the famous author pronounced that the British people would never yield to fascism during WWII, but they were led by a greedy ruling class. Us beavers have the same problem.
We are very clear about Trump. The orange man has united us and we are all willing to fight back to protect our economy and, if need be, to keep our country. We will raise the maple leaf, no matter the cost. This trade war will hit us beavers first and hardest. Our economy will suffer, and we will lose jobs. We will buy Canadian, even if we have to pay more. But who is leading us?
The lion of the Canadian establishment: it roars at press conferences and through the media but it’s unwilling to sacrifice very much. The same Loblaws that hiked the price of our food during the pandemic will benefit again from the Buy Canadian sentiment. The banks that own our mortgages will happily repossess our homes if we can’t pay. The same politicians that ask us to make sacrifices in the name of Canada, are unwilling to ask the same of Galen Weston or TD Bank.
During this election we are told again and again that we are in a fight for our lives, that the US is trying to weaken Canada in order to take it over. Yet, instead of fighting this war and supporting Canadians, the new prime minister called an election.
We are again asked to choose between the Lion’s two ruling parties. I fear the poor beaver is all alone in this one.
