First Black Arts Centre in Toronto opens in Midtown

The Nia Centre for the Arts officially opened at Oakwood and Vaughan, near the heart of Little of Jamaica. It is Canada’s first professional multidisciplinary Black arts facility and offers a space to gather, experience, and promote Black arts, culture, and artists.

“There is an urgent need to address the lack of gathering places for Black communities. The Centre is a direct response to this need,” said Alica Hall, Executive Director of the Nia Centre. “We are thrilled to be opening our doors and continue to create dedicated space for our community.”

The Nia Centre is an expansive 14,000 sq. ft. facility that has been 15 years in the making. It has state-of-the-art amenities, including a multi-use performance area, a digital media hub, dedicated artist and youth zones, event spaces, and a contemporary art gallery.

The venue hosts a diverse range of arts, from music and literature to visual arts and theatre, often in collaboration with emerging artists and arts organizations.

The goal of the Nia Centre is to bring the community together and nurture the next generation of Black artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs.
